When I first started freelance writing, I heeded the advice, “Write what you know.” So, I wrote about being vegetarian, and raising children on vegetarian diets–yes, I’m vegetarian, and have been for . . . wow, 19 years. When my girls were babies and toddlers, I wrote about baby and toddler stuff. Blocked tear ducts, birthmarks, undescended testes (a friend of mine had a little fellow with that problem), whether or not you should use nonsense baby talk with your children. Those were the kinds of issues that were hot in the circles I was moving in, and I got the story ideas from my own parenting experiences and from the experiences of other mothers.

But, the more I wrote, the more networking I did, and the more confident I became about my writing, things began to change. I picked up a copy of a magazine called me first (it’s no longer around), in my gynecologist’s office, and when I got home, I sent a short e-mail to the editor. “I love your magazine. Are you looking for writers?” I got an assignment from her that very day, and continued to write for the magazine until it shut down. This was a sexual health magazine for young women, so I wrote about genital herpes, FSD, the history of menstrual pads . . . stuff I knew little or nothing about.

Since then I’ve gone on to write about scaffold safety, heavy equipment operation, the wholesale grocery business, teleradiology, genome chips, raising LGBT children . . .  stuff I knew absolutely nothing about. And the funny thing is that I’ve become passionate about each assignment or project, whatever the topic or subject.

Sure, sometimes I still write what I know. But there’s so much I’m curious about. There’s so much I want to know–about everything. What fuels my writing is a drive to know and understand, and then to put it into words so others can know and understand too.
